Joyce Barnes

Joyce Barnes has implemented workflow and systems improvements in both technical and non-technical settings for over 20 years. She is one of the first experts in the development and evaluation of process improvement training materials, and brings unsurpassed experience and knowledge to clients seeking to develop their own internal resources.

A versatile technology professional, Joyce has experience in a wide range of industries, including software development, continuous improvement consulting, collaborative change and facilitative leadership, educational research and development, higher education and bicycle retail sales. Joyce began her long-term collaboration with Toni Davies at Productivity, Inc., where she worked with Toni to develop kaizen instructional materials for public and client-customized workshops and train-the-trainer delivery. These included the first models for Total Productive Maintenance, Cedac, Visual Controls and 5S, and Mistake Proofing.

One of Joyce’s most significant work experiences was for PTC/Mathsoft Engineering & Education, Inc. Documentation Group. Joyce developed reliable document source control and predictable workflow processes and built in safeguards against system failure, cultivating trust based on consistent delivery and encouraging better collaboration within the documentation team. She also developed standard procedures for writing and formatting documentation and was responsible for the creation and delivery of high-quality software guides and tutorials in print and digital formats, and optimized for localization. Always with an eye on education, Joyce ensured ongoing success of systems by training colleagues to be self-sufficient and providing materials to support that competency.

Joyce, a highly skilled and empathetic interviewer with experience both in formative evaluation and ethnographic research, is an invaluable resource for establishing the “Voice of the Customer” with clients seeking to understand their customer quality, cost and delivery expectations with a pro-active kaizen approach. This is critical in all service related improvements.

Joyce holds an Ed.M. with a focus in Technology in Education from Harvard University, a B.A. in Anthropology from Rutgers University (Douglass College), and she has studied Gender and Technology at MIT with Sherry Turkle, Instructional Design at Boston University, and Intercultural Relations at Lesley College. Joyce’s other interests include music, film, photography, bicycling, swimming, birding, gardening, and getting outdoors in general.
